About Us - Bovine Frozen Semen Supply Chain Management System

About Bovine Frozen Semen Supply Chain Management System

Bovine breeding is one of the primary and important activities undertaken by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Government of Karnataka. Artificial Insemination (AI) is an important service used to achieve continuous genetic improvement and enhance the overall productivity of native and non-descript breeds of cattle and buffaloes in the State.

To meet the growing demand for artificial insemination services, the Department has established four Bovine Frozen Semen Straw Production Centres in the State. The frozen semen straws produced at these centres are mobilized to distribution centres located in the four divisions of Karnataka and are subsequently distributed to districts and Veterinary Institutions where artificial insemination services are provided to the bovine population.

Need for the System

The complete process of bovine frozen semen stock management, starting from production centres through distribution centres and districts up to the end-user Veterinary Institutions, has traditionally been carried out manually. The manual process has created limitations in data handling, data availability, stock monitoring, data analysis and effective decision-making.

To overcome these limitations, the Bovine Frozen Semen Supply Chain Management System (BFSS) has been proposed as a centralized digital platform for managing and monitoring the movement and availability of frozen semen straws across the State.

Bovine Frozen Semen Supply Chain

Production Centres

Frozen semen straws are produced at four designated Bovine Frozen Semen Production Centres in Karnataka.

Distribution Centres

Produced frozen semen straws are mobilized to distribution centres located across the four divisions of the State.

District Level Distribution

Frozen semen straws are distributed from the divisional distribution centres to the respective districts based on requirements.

Veterinary Institutions

The frozen semen straws ultimately reach Veterinary Institutions where Artificial Insemination services are provided to bovine populations.

Objectives of BFSS

  • Digitize the complete bovine frozen semen supply chain from production centres to end-user Veterinary Institutions.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date frozen semen stock information at different levels of the supply chain.
  • Improve visibility and traceability of frozen semen straw movement across the State.
  • Enable timely availability of stock and supply information for effective decision-making.
  • Reduce dependency on manual records and improve data accuracy and availability.

Key Benefits

Better Stock Management

Provides better visibility of stock availability and movement at each stage of the supply chain.

Data-Driven Decisions

Enables timely reports and analysis to support effective planning and decision-making.

Improved Service Delivery

Supports timely availability and distribution of frozen semen straws for Artificial Insemination services.
